I am in desperate need of information on how to go racing, please excuse me if this has been covered previously. I have spent several hours looking for information on race classes / rules / regulations and have not been able to dig up too many specifics. I am wondering if there is a class for older 250cc four stroke machines single, paralell, V twin configuration. I have looked at bucket racing, and this is essentialy what I am interested in however the regulations for bucket racing seem to be a little antiquated as this class was formed many years ago when almost everyone had a CB100 tucked in the back corner of the shed and didnt know what else to do with them. Whilst looking through classifieds I have found very few machines that would be suitable. Since there is and always has been such a strong market for 250s in Australia because of the road laws it would seem to me that there must be class for racing the buggers. But I cant sem to find it. My idea to go racing is very simple. Find an older small capacity machine, remove anything superfulous, go to track, rip around all day without destroying expensive tyres, brakes, etc grin ridiculously while laughing at myself and others wackiness, and encourage others to do same. All this without having to re-mortgage or sell kidneys. So..... If anybody can point me in the right direction or knows of anyone performing these sorts of shenanigans please let me know. Classic racing looks like alot of fun but I dont want to jump in on something that is too precious to break, maybe later.

G'day mate, welcome along. I'd suggest getting along to the next meeting in Vic and checking it out, try and see what class you would like to run in. There is no distinction between 4 & 2 strokes in classic racing, only year and capacity decide your class. I've only started racing this year myself, and I cant recommend highly enough buying a race ready bike, with a log book (I dont think a log book is needed for a bucket, is it???). With this done you only then have to worry about yourself, ie protective gear, some track time, learn some racecraft, race licence. Then your away! Good luck |

Also I have been trying to deveop a 250 Single cylinder class look aroiund here for the details. The advise to come to the Southern Classic is good. It is on 1/ 2October at Broadford. Details at You must be logged in to see this link. again. |

Indeed. If you really want to know your machine, build it yourself (I enjoy the building part more than riding so it suited me well)! If you just want to get out there and ride, then buy one already built! |

I bought a 350 Honda from a magazine. What I bought sight unseen was rubbish. Too late, money gone. Still not running 3 years later! Pushed my luck again, bought RC181 Replica, sight unseen, just colour pics in Just Bikes. After phone call to guy, I bought. Got receipts for $8K plus! On delivery, I was thrilled. Knew it had starting problems. Fix was fuel tap blocked, discovered when fuel pipe fell off and very little fuel dripped out! Fitted electronic ignition, CB750 carbs (will never work said the wise!) starts in 2 metres now. Jumped out of 3rd, had gears under cut (6 speed box) Won't take it on our Go-Kart track, so 2500 Km trip to Darwin once a year. Beats CBR400/ Matchless/ VFR400's. Now building my own CYB 350 replica. Moral? Go with your wallet! |

It's very difficult to find any class in historic racing, in which you'll get a competitive ride without spending a big dollar. I've considered approaching MA with a view to getting additional 350cc and 500cc Supermono classes into the rule book, as well as the existing unlimited class. It'd mean a few extra rides for historic bikes. How would a 250 Ducati go against a 350BSA or a late 350cc Honda single. Pretty good I reckon. |
Is your machine authentic or merely eligible? |
