As part of the HMRAV'S drive to increase the participation rate of Historic motorcycles and riders the club is planning to extend it ride day program at Broadford by relocating the Southern Classic to Broadford to capitalize on a long weekend in NSW and SA. The HMRAV considers such a move creates an opportunity to develop a Premier race Meeting based at Reg Hunt Park, Broadford. The first weekend of October[ 4/ 5 2003]in South Australia and New South Wales forms a long weekend and the idea of encouraging interstate riders to attend beckons. Winton is not available for that weekend because of their Festival of Speed. Preliminary discussions have suggestted it would be successful in attracting interstate riders and visitors. THE CONCEPT The concept would involve developing a meeting, which draws from a wider range of potential spectators and competitors. By utilising a campsite adjacent to the Road Racing pits, on site camping and pitting could be encouraged which would be a novel and useful approach to meetings in Victoria. Spectators could also be camped at the existing Dirt Track campsite.
We plan to A] Establish a rally for motorcyclists, to be known as the “ Southern Classic Rally”, to attend and work with clubs to develop this aspect. B] Have a relevant “Feature” motorcycle or motorcycles each year and work with the relevant one make or other clubs to promote it. C] Establish a program to attract overseas riders, by advertising in overseas magazines. D] Initiate new categories of racing, Clubmans, Formula 2 Solos and maybe F2 Sidecars. E] Seek to establish a committee including the HMRAV, the Shire and the Major events committee to oversea the meeting development. F] Create a Trade show G] Set up a Swap meet THE BENEFITS The overall benefits are too great to nominate, but specifically they include A] The further development of Reg Hunt Park at Broadford. B} Increase the public awareness of Historic Motorcycle racing C] Development of a new range of paying spectators. D] Expanding the range of machines being raced to develop a base for the future. E] Assisting the local area with Tourism. G] Expanding the opportunity for Sidecars to strut their stuff. H] Increased expenditure within the district. I] Promotion of local accommodation PERMITS REQUIRED Camping and Highway signage CAPITAL WORKS IMPROVEMENTS REQUIRED Run offs around the track to be improved, particularly Crash Corner. Replacementl of the ditch at the end of the Start/ Finish straight, with a suitable grate system. Establish a campsite adjacent to the Road Race pit area with a bitumen track all around Create a suitable bitumen track between the circuit and the proposed campsite via the pits. Provide for campfires and firewood. Provide for camper cooking facilities and water supply to the campsite. Provide for Catering facilities for decent meals, not fried food. General improvement in spectator facilities Beautification works USE OF EXISTING INFRASTRUCTURE The existing campsite at the dirt track could be used for spectator overflow. The Motocross Pits could be used for on site catering, not fried food.
