Can anyone enlighten me on why a sidecar would shake its head at low speed. By shaking its head I mean SERIOUSLY shaking its head, it only happens when at very low speeds like when approaching the grid or approaching a really slow corner. It goes away under acceleration or once it is turned into a corner but cannot be held by the rider in a straight line. Steering head angle has been checked and is along the lines of what various constructors here state it should be, trail and sidecar wheel alignment are also along the lines of being acceptable, the only thing not measured so far is the sidecar wheel lead. Could this affect the steering or should we be rechecking something else? Help needed to get another sidecar to the Nationals later this year. If this one gets sorted there will be 4 or 5 from WA alone.

G'day Alan, maybe a weight bias thing?,too much on the front wheel/steering?,coz you say accelerating unloads the front??,did a bigger (heavier) motor go in?,did anyone check tyre pressure ,(justa thought ),hth! |

Is this a machine that may have been in Wagga? Because there was a machine there that was very hard to steer.PM me perhaps Alan and I will try and find something from this end also. |

Hi,
I know this sounds a little simple, but is it possible that the wheel/hub/tyre is out of round, or the axle/bearings not quite right? You could try swapping to a known good wheel and see what happens.....?
Is it only happening under brakes? Might be a warped brake disk or drum hub out of round?
Just some thoughts.

You've been around sidecars how long John and can't answer that one,yes its the trail,i take it its a postie on mini wheels at 20deg-5/8in,just ride over the top of it they handle great at speed like that and want to turn left, unusial for a sidecar but will also want to dig in under brakes on lefts, easy way to cure is put a higher profile tire on,sidecar from Wagga, really, haven't you ever pushed a Woolworths trolly? |

Sorry guys for not acknowledging your postings re my problem. I am slowly working through all the suggestions and eliminating them. I can tell you though that this machine isnt from Wagga and the problem isnt trail, I have set the trail so far back that it was almost impossible to turn and it still shook its head, I have also lightened the front hub as it was very heavy and had it balanced, I have put a new wheel on and also a new tyre, steering head angle has been checked and the trail reset, the steering head was slightly off from the vertical and this has also been corrected, the vertical alignment of both rear and sidecar wheels has been checked and corrected. The only thing not measured which just came to mind is the sidecar wheel lead, a job for tomorrow night. Thanks again for your input and if anything else comes to mind please let me know, which I will also as soon as the damn thing is cured.
