I am not purist, but I believe that the genuine racing machinery should be preserved and nurtured, and major modifications discouraged. It wouldn't be a bad idea to preserve a section of the pits at historic race meetings for the really good old bikes, and run a concours d'elegance with the trophy incumbent on participation in a 'spirited demonstration' - which could be run in pre and post 72 sections. That way we'd hear and see the really good old stuff fire a shot, and it would please the old farts who own them, as well as the spectators.

My ultimate fantasy in classic road racing is to be on the grid with thirty other competitors, all mounted on Seeley Jawas. The motors would all be 70 horsepower alcohol fuelled four valve Jawa speedway motors, and the frames would be Mk2 or MK3 Seeleys with upsidedown forks. Gearboxes would all be four or five speed close ratio, and the brakes would all be four spot discs. Sort of a modern version of the Lansdowne series or supermono 500.

This would have to be the best ever British single cylinder motorcycle,but why would you buy one?

not a fantasy in scotland at the bob mac race meeting last month, most g50s manxs etc were all seely caffrey etc type famed specials , side cars were weslake, imp , norton and one honda 4.the seen is alive and well over-there and was interesting and an eye opener.
not so much purist machines in the factory sense but more so in what the privateers raced. pity we haven't gone down that road

Alan, I imagine one would buy a Seeley G50 to enjoy. That is what life is about. We had the Hondas because we enjoyed and we had the G50 Matchless because we enjoyed. Bill Horsman and I see each other on nearly a daily basis because we enjoy each others company. Levi Day and I see each other often and speak quite a bit non racing related. I am too busy living life in the real world to be having unfulfilled fantasies. Be happy. All the best Jerry

Jerry, I watched Bill race your G50, but I can't remember if it was a Seeley. I know he said to be that he thought the MK3 frame felt as though it was flexing in the front when ridden hard. Mine has a chrome moly tube bolted in, from below the steering head down to the motor. I'd love to own a Seeley Matchless G50 like the one in the clip, but you wouldn't get a run in Period3 with the Molnar manxes. It would be like my current bike - useless in every historic class. I suppose you could always convert it into a cafe racer and ride it on Sundays on the public roads keeping judiciously below the speed limits. That fate has been suggested for my Norton. Even if I converted it to use petrol and did that obscenity, I couldn't resist wringing its neck - goodbye licence in 5 minutes. I've got a ride day at Winton in two weeks time, and I'll be trying out the new gearbox. I want to have another look at Rex and the clones in Period4, - perhaps at the next Austin 7 meeting

Alan, Firstly our g50 had a Paine replica STD frame that I then fiddled with. Bill did not like the Seeley frame where the engine was a stressed member. It did flex too much. Yes you would have to run a Seeley in P4. So what. The Paton is the quickest in P4 500 which with David Johnston on it did about the same lap times as Dave Coles on the McIntyre G50. What a lot of us old farts forget is that we are a lot slower than the bikes we have and or ride. I honestly mean it when I say "Go and enjoy yourself". I always say that to my jockeys. Never "Go and win" Why else do we do what we do. All the best Jerry

yep being doing that and having a great time .thats what its all about get on the track and enjoy at your level, whatever that may be. 8 lc yamahas at our last collie meeting in WA great numbers and all good fun.cheap and cheerfull racing !
